This analysis is based on closing-price data as of October 30, 2026. Whether you're researching AGL Energy (AGL) on the ASX or learning how to read stock charts, here are objective support, resistance and technical invalidation levels built from the RSI, MACD and ATR indicators.

AGL Energy closed at $9.02 on October 30, 15.1% below its $10.63 52-week high and 13.6% above its $7.94 52-week low. The two-year chart is a long decline from about $11.80 in early 2025 into an $8–$9.60 range, interrupted by a sharp February 2026 rally that faded through mid-year; the October advance has now lifted price back to the long-term anchored VWAP ($8.93). Short-term structure has improved: SMA5 > SMA20 > SMA60 re-formed on Oct 26, MACD has been above its signal line since Oct 6 and ADX at 33.9 shows a trend with real strength. Against that, Mansfield RS versus the S&P/ASX 200 slipped back below zero (−0.85%) this week, and the close came on light volume (0.725×) — the chart reads as a recovering trend still short of clear market leadership.

① Price & Moving Averages

AGL price, moving averages, Bollinger Bands and anchored VWAP — 90 days

The two-year frame starts near $11 in late 2024, peaks at an $11.82 close in January 2025 and then steps lower through mid-2025. On Aug 13, 2025 the share price fell −13.1% in one session on about 6.6× average volume — the bar that anchors the two-year aVWAP ($8.93) — and it traded in roughly an $8.03–$9.60 band for the next six months. A +11.75% session on Feb 11, 2026 (about 5.1× volume) began a run to the $10.63 52-week high on Feb 20, but that gain was given back from April to July, with the 52-week low of $7.94 printed on Jul 13. There are no unfilled gaps on either frame.

On the 90-day frame, the Aug 12, 2026 bar (+5.95% on about 4.3× volume, in AGL's August results period) anchors the 90-day aVWAP ($8.64) and carried price to a $9.00 close on Aug 19. That move faded through September to an $8.01 close on Sep 25. The October recovery included a +4.09% session on Oct 13 (1.77× volume, no catalyst identified) and a +2.47% session on Oct 23 (1.52×) to a $9.12 close, the highest of the 90-day window. Price has since eased and recovered within $8.84–$9.03.

Condition timing: the close moved back above SMA20 on Oct 6 and above SMA60 on Oct 12. The SMA5 > SMA20 > SMA60 ordering — this bucket's defining condition — first formed in March 2026, re-formed briefly on Aug 19 and Sep 4, and re-formed most recently on Oct 26 on a −0.99% session at 1.26× volume, as SMA20 moved above SMA60; that bar was not an event day. The close itself sat below SMA5 from Oct 27 to Oct 29 and moved back above it on Oct 30. The Fibonacci swing in the data runs from $8.01 (Sep 25) to $8.90 (Oct 20); its 23.6% retracement is $8.69 and 38.2% is $8.56. The chart labels the $8.90 swing high (0% of the swing) as resistance, but the close is already above it, so it now sits beneath price.

② Volume

AGL volume with 20-day average — 90 days

The tallest bars on the 90-day panel cluster around the Aug 12 results-period session and the days after it. Since then volume has been steady: the 20-day average is 3,098,046 shares. In October the up sessions were generally the heavier ones — Oct 13 at 1.77× and Oct 23 at 1.52× — while the screened ASX universe's median ratio ran about 0.65–1.30× from Oct 12 to Oct 30, a normal range, so those two bars stood above typical market participation.

The last five sessions were mixed: three declines from Oct 26 to Oct 28 (up to 1.33× on Oct 28) followed by two gains on lighter volume. The Oct 30 close came on 0.725× average volume, below the universe median of about 0.92× that day. The recovery since late September has had volume behind its up days, but the latest bar did not add to it.

③ MACD

AGL MACD 12-26-9 — 90 days

The MACD line is 0.1535 against a signal of 0.1342, a histogram of +0.0193. The golden cross came on Oct 6 from well below zero, after the September decline, and the line crossed above zero in mid-October. The histogram peaked around mid-October and has been shrinking over the last week, while the MACD line has flattened near its late-August high. That pattern describes momentum that is still positive but no longer expanding; a cross back below the signal would be the first sign of the October push losing force.

④ RSI

AGL RSI 14 with overbought and oversold zones — 90 days

RSI(14) is 61.4 (61.4 on both frames), above the 50 midline and below 70. It touched the 30 area at the late-September low, climbed through 50 in early October and has held between the mid-50s and high-60s since mid-October without reaching overbought. No RSI divergence is flagged on either frame. The reading describes firm momentum with room left before overbought conditions, though the late-October dip and recovery show it has stopped rising for now.

⑤ Mansfield Relative Strength

AGL Mansfield relative strength versus the S&P/ASX 200 — 90 days

Mansfield RS vs the S&P/ASX 200 is −0.85%, just below zero (underperform), with the data tagging its slope as rising. A week earlier it was +1.51 and a month earlier −8.14, so it lost 2.35 points on the week and gained 7.30 on the month. That puts the monthly view in the negative-improving quadrant and the weekly view in negative-deteriorating: RS climbed from the −10 area in September, crossed above zero in late October, then slipped back under it as price eased from the Oct 23 high. On the two-year panel RS has been below zero for most of the period since mid-2025, apart from short spells in February–April 2026. The selection's RS rank of 92 reflects the strong one-month improvement, but the absolute level is still at the zero line rather than clearly above it.

⑥ ATR & ADX

AGL ATR 14 and ADX 14 — 90 days

ATR(14) is $0.172, or 1.9% of price, which sets the 1×ATR reference at $8.85 and the 2×ATR technical invalidation level at $8.68, 3.8% below the close. ATR rose with the October advance and has eased slightly in the last few sessions. ADX is 33.9 (33.7 on the two-year frame), above the 25 line that marks a strong trend, and it has been rising gently through October. ADX measures trend strength, not direction; read with the rising moving averages and positive MACD, it says the October move has persistence rather than being noise. Because ATR is low, the invalidation level sits only a few ordinary sessions away.

⑦ OBV

AGL on-balance volume with 20-day average — 90 days

OBV is tagged accumulation on the 90-day frame (above its MA20 and rising) and early accumulation on the two-year frame (above its MA20 but flat). No OBV divergence is flagged on either frame. On the 90-day panel OBV rose sharply from early October to new highs for the window, dipped during the Oct 26–28 declines and turned up again on Oct 29–30. On the two-year panel OBV has recovered from its deep low in September 2025 to around the level of early 2025, a sign that net volume flow has stopped draining.

The OBV-to-MA20 gap is +14.68% on the two-year frame and +5.26% on the 90-day frame. These percentages measure distance from the moving average, not divergence.

Bull Case vs Bear Case

Bull Case

  • Close > SMA5 > SMA20 > SMA60, with the ordering re-formed on Oct 26 on a non-event bar
  • ADX 33.9 — a strong-trend reading, rising through October
  • MACD above its signal since the Oct 6 golden cross and above zero
  • Price above both anchored VWAPs ($8.93 and $8.64), back above the average tied to the Aug 2025 decline
  • OBV above MA20 on both frames; accumulation on the 90-day frame
  • Mansfield RS +7.30 points on the month, up from the −10 area in September

Bear Case

  • Mansfield RS −0.85% — back below zero, −2.35 points on the week
  • The Oct 30 close came on light volume (0.725×)
  • MACD histogram shrinking for a week — momentum no longer expanding
  • The MA ordering broke quickly after its Aug 19 and Sep 4 re-formations; the current version is five sessions old
  • The two-year trend is still lower highs from $11.82; the $10.63 52-week high is 17.8% overhead
  • Price has not closed above the $9.12 Oct 23 high, and the 2y aVWAP ($8.93) is only 1.0% below

What to Watch

Conclusion

AGL Energy closed at $9.02 on Oct 30 with Close > SMA5 > SMA20 > SMA60 re-formed on Oct 26, MACD above its signal since Oct 6 and ADX at 33.9, after an October recovery from the $8.01 September low back above the long-term anchored VWAP. The weak points are relative strength — Mansfield RS slipped back to −0.85% versus the S&P/ASX 200 this week — a light-volume close, and a history of this ordering breaking soon after it forms, so it reads as an improving trend inside a longer decline rather than established leadership. The technical invalidation level is $8.68 (2×ATR): a daily close below it would undo the current structure.
